"We weren't allowed to go into that forest around our house. Our dad did and he never came back, so we assumed the worst."
"Ryker," the kit whined at his brother, "You know what mom said, we shouldn't be here." Ryker was peering into the forest outside their home. It was so dense that barely any light filtered through, and any that did filter through turned violet. Ryker sighed.
"Reynir, aren't you a tad bit curious?" Ryker asked as he walked towards his brother. Reynir had a confused, worried expression on his face. Ryker grabbed Reynir's hands, "Please, just a little. We can hold hands and won't get lost. I promise we'll go home after a few minutes." Reynir hung his head down and sighed in consent.

"Ryker, you promised that we wouldn't get lost," Reynir cried as he clung onto his brother. Ryker paid no attention, he just dragged Reynir along.
"We're not lost, we're exploring, of course things look confusing," Ryker mumbled in a defensively. He didn't want his brother's crying to ruin his fun.
"Well I'm lost! I don't recognize any of this, and that's the definition of lost." Reynir wailed as he became dead weight. Ryker sighed and looked at his brother. His expression softened as he saw Reynir.
"We're only a few feet into the forest Reynir, it's just so dense it's hard to tell," Ryker attempted to comfort him, "Just a few more minutes and then we'll head straight home."
Reynir broke out a smile and sniffed, "Do you promise Ryker? A real promise, not like those other fake promises." Ryker silently nodded then continued into the forest with Reynir willingly following.

"Look Ryker! I can see the light from our house from here!" Reynir squealed out and headed home. Ryker leaned away, the forest still luring him in. More than half of the area remained undiscovered. Reynir looked at him with disappointment, "Ryker, you promised that we would go home now."
Ryker just looked away. He knew he'd give into Reynir if he looked, "You can go home, but I still want to explore." In bitterness Reynir gripped harder onto his brother's hand and tried to tug him home..
"Ryker let's go! You...promised..." Reynir commanded but eventually weakened. He continued to fight a losing battle. Ryker was getting tired, so he tried to snake his way out of Reynir's grasp. This provoked a steel grip and a betrayed look on Reynir's part.
"Look Reynir, if you let go you can go home. I'll look around a while longer and then come home. I really do promise this time. No more fake promises." Ryker persuaded and pleaded. Reynir's grip softened, this was the very first time Ryker actually said he really promised. Defeated he let go, gave his brother one last glance and then wandered back home.
